Petrified Wood forms when a fallen tree is buried under sediment and, over millions of years, the organic material is slowly replaced molecule by molecule with minerals — most commonly quartz or chalcedony — until the wood becomes stone while retaining its original structure in extraordinary detail. This piece is estimated to be between 50 and 200 million years old.
